Distributed Geographic Information Systems Project Concepts Discussion Document Draft

چکیده

We discuss end-user applications and enabling technologies for Distributed Geographical Information Systems (DGIS) and review concepts for a Distributed High Performance Computing (DHPC) project for the development of a high performance DGIS. Archiving, access and processing of scientific data are discussed in the context of geographic and environmental applications with special emphasis on the potential for local-area weather, agriculture, soil and land management products. Software technologies such as tiling and caching techniques can be used to optimise storage requirements and response time for applications requiring very large data sets such as multi-channel satellite data. Distributed High Performance Computing hardware technology underpins our proposed system. In particular, we discuss the capabilities of a distributed hardware environment incorporating: high bandwidth communications networks such as Telstra's Experimental Broadband Network (EBN); large capacity hierarchical storage systems; and high performance parallel computing resources.

Argumaps for Spatial Planning

In their contributions, participants of spatial planning discussions refer to geographic objects. In this paper, an explicit linkage between online maps and arguments is proposed for being used in a World-Wide Webbased support systems for Collaborative Spatial Decision-Making (CSDM). The representation and storage of geo-referenced arguments in Argumentation Maps ("Argumaps") will advance the l...

Where's Downtown

Humans think and talk about regions and spatial relations imprecisely, in terms of vague concepts that are fuzzy or probabilistic (e.g., downtown, near). The functionality of geographic information systems will be increased if they can interpret vague queries. We discuss traditional and newer approaches to defining and modeling spatial queries. Most of the research on vague concepts in informat...

Documenting Civic Engagement: A Plan for the Tucson Pima Arts Council

In 2009 SIAP made a site visit to the Tucson Pima Arts Council (TPAC) to collaborate on a plan to document TPAC’s impact on civic engagement in Tucson and Pima County. The report begins with a review of the policy context in which the project was undertaken, including the findings of the Pima Cultural Plan. This is followed by a discussion of the proposed strategy and specific recommendations f...
